The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO) is set 800 years prior to the Oblivion Crisis (Tes IV: Oblivion), and 1000 years prior to the events of The Dragonborn Prophecy (TES V: Skyrim). Like the other games in the series, The Elder Scrolls Online’s story is connected to the eponymous and prophetic Elder Scrolls. The events portrayed in The Elder Scrolls Online centre around the Daedric Prince Molag Bal’s attempts to conquer and subdue the inhabitants of Tamriel.
In 2E 578, four years prior to the start of the game, an explosion of arcane energy occurred in the capital of Cyrodil, the Imperial City. This explosions caused aftershocks across the lands of Tamriel, leading to many natural (and unnatural) disasters and causing many mages to go mad. The explosion also led to the constellation of the Serpent growing so large that it dominated the night sky, and Deadra began appearing in greater numbers than ever before. It appears that these events were not accidental; they have been connected to the malevolent Daedric Prince Molag Bal, who seeks to merge Nirn – the mortal plane – with the Planes of Oblivion.
Despite the immediate danger posed by the invasion of Molag Bal and his Daedric armies, the inhabitants of Nirn are locked in a mortal war for control of the Imperial City and the White-Gold Tower, power over all of Tamriel. The many leaders of the nations of Tamriel believe the incumbent Emperor on the Ruby Throne to be a pretender and seek to usurp him to their own ends, fighting a massive war with the Imperials as well as each other. The various nations and peoples of Nirn have joined together to form three mighty factions: Skyrim, Morrowind and Black Marsh have joined together as The Ebonheart Pact, High Rock, Sentinel and Orsinium stand under the rule of the High King in Wayrest and The Daggerfall Covenant, and Valenwood, Elsweyr and Summerset march under the banner of the Aldmeri Dominion.
The story follows the players journey through the land of Tamriel, as they chose their allegiances in the fight against Molag Bal and the war for the White-Gold Tower.
